{The letter itself is rather nondescript, but the handwriting is very elegant and neat, looking more like calligraphy than handwriting}

Dearest Hei,
I hope that everything is well on your little island and that you are quite relaxed, since I still think that your vacation is well deserved. It really is quiet and boring here in this church, and there is little for a nun to do other than pray and tend to the keeping of the church. Of course, Amshel had it set so that I would have to, telling the people of the church that I was ill with consumption. They are nice enough people, but because of that, they rarely come to see me for fear of catching the disease. For that, it is a bit lonely, but this was also when I read almost constantly. It has been many years since I had read these books, so I am especially reminded of how fond of Poe, Thoreau, and Lord Byron I am. The people that do visit are always amused by my choices in such "old" literature, but the newer things just never have the grandiose, beautiful tone. I have to admit that I have to keep a dictionary by my side while I read, since there are many words with which I am unfamiliar, and I do remember quite fondly how I had to ask Amshel and Solomon of the meaning of particularly difficult passages, since the "symbolism", I believe they called it, was too much for me to understand.

I cannot boast the intelligence of these poets, but I still find that their words are touching, even a century later. I am sure that Mr. Poe especially would have been amused to meet me, if his literature was any indication. It certainly is odd to think that I was actually alive when all these writers were, but a world away and locked in that tower.

I had asked Solomon the last time he went out to get me a copy of Grimm's fairytales, so we shall see if I get it or not. While our vacations themselves are quite different, I think, I feel that both of us are quite relaxed, just in very different ways.

Chaleureusement,
Diva

[The letter is on a smooth, fine piece of parchment, fresh and not yet stained yellow with age. The writing is, as ever, absolutely terrible.]

Hei,

In case it slips my mind later (and it very well may), remind me and I will take you and Yin to China should you wish to go.

There is one other thing I wish to show you, but I'm not sure it's visible this time of year. I may have to find a more northern locale to see it properly.

Regards,
Mu.

Hei--

You probably won't see me around the plane for the next week or so. I've been making day trips into the hills around the house and I think I'm going to make a longer trip--go backpacking. A tame little adventure I guess.

I'm terrible at writing letters. I just thought maybe we could have that dinner before I left. Here, maybe. I'd like to show you this place before I end up back in Japan. Let me know what you think.

Meeting at the kitchen would work. I already have food. Well I will. Not mine. Already promised that, but--

[a scribble] Sure, I'll meet you at the kitchen.

{Nicer stationary this time, and it even has the lightest scent of perfume on it, since Diva sprayed the whole stack}

Dearest Hei,

There is really no need to apologize! It really is wonderful to open my mailbox to a letter from a friend. Though, I guess the fact that your island is there is a nice thing. That way, you can take a vacation whenever you want, right? At the very least, I look forward to trying this fruit! With a name like that, I can only imagine what it tastes like.

You really have not? Sam gave me a book of Lord Byron's poetry the other day (as well as the Grimm Fairytales, but I doubt Hei would be interested in that), so you could borrow it if you would like. Or perhaps I could read some aloud to you. Poetry is better spoken, right?

I would love to go to your island, though. Maybe this time, swimming would go a bit better. I have to admit, I have not practiced since, but I would still like to try. If you went back to your island, I would love to go with you so that you would not be as lonely.

Chaleureusement,
Diva

[the letter consists of several pages - a handwritten note in blue ink on top, followed by a few sheets of computer print-outs]

Hei -
Ran those tests I was talking about. Everything came back completely identical - I've enclosed the in-depth analyses in case you want to take a look at them. Strange, but, I suppose, not entirely unexpected. You'd think the chemical composition would've changed along with the flavour - and the colour, for that matter - but that would make too much sense.

God knows I ought to be used to nothing in life making sense anymore. Or, for that matter, the afterlife. (Speaking of which, still haven't noticed these peculiar changes people have been mentioning. Maybe I escaped unscathed, touch wood.)

Hope to see you 'round soon.

-Martha
